The morning air over Holmenkollen carried the scent of pine trees, damp grass, and anticipation. By midday on June 17, 1973, 30,000+ young music fans had gathered on the hills overlooking Oslo, transforming the famous ski arena into a sea of bitchin' threads of denim, bohemian flairs like colorful scarves, funky shirts, tight fitting t-shirts with slogans or graphics, flashy halter necks and sequins, and long hair swaying in the summer breeze while some wearing floppy wide-brimmed or patterned bucket hats, and berets. For many, Ragnarock Festival was more than a concert. It was a gathering of a generation. The world was changing rapidly, and music had become the soundtrack to those changes. People arrived carrying blankets, baskets, and acoustic guitars, eager to spend a day immersed in rock music and community. The setting could hardly have been more dramatic.
